Décadance Fine Art Print

Fine Art Print “Décadance”

“Décadance” serves as commentary on the societal phenomenon of materialism and consumer culture. By highlighting the negative impacts of mass consumption and the ways in which advertising can manipulate our desires and sense of self, the work encourages viewers to question their own relationship with material goods and the role they play in our lives.

The sentence “je consomme, tu consommes, nous sommes con” is a play on words and it has a few meanings in the context of the work. It is a conjugation of the verb “to consume”, in first, second, and third person plural, meaning “I consume, you consume, we are idiots” which highlights that materialism is a collective problem. The sentence implies that by consuming excessively, we are making ourselves foolish.

The work hints to a progression to decadence, that the psychological desire for acquisition as means of defining ourselves is a detriment to sense of self-worth and societal values. However, by illuminating the negative impacts of excessive consumption, it effectively encourages self-reflection and introspection in the viewer, to shift away from the decadence of materialism and towards a more meaningful, conscious and responsible way of living.
