Je Ne Fume Pas Fine Art Print

Fine Art Print “Je Ne Fume Pas”

The piece explores the exploitation of the feminist movement by the tobacco industry. Tobacco companies have a history of exploiting social movements to promote their products. Starting in the 1920s, tobacco companies began targeting women with advertising that portrayed smoking as a form of empowerment and liberation. This strategy was a response to the growing awareness of the health risks of smoking and the decreasing social acceptability of the habit, particularly among women.

This exploitation of the feminist movement for commercial gain was not only deceptive but also harmful as it encouraged women to take up smoking, a habit that has been linked to numerous health problems including lung cancer, heart disease, and respiratory illness. The work, “Je Ne Fume Pas” (I Don’t Smoke), depicts the idealised images of women smoking presented in advertising, while conversely declaring a message to denounce it.
