The work declares “Ceci n’est pas un sein” (This is not a breast) in reference to René Magritte’s “La Trahison des Images” (The Treachery of Images), a work famous for challenging the viewer’s perception of reality. Similarly, this work challenges what is considered “appropriate” online. It denounces gender politics regarding the censorship of female nipples which masquerades itself as a policy for protection and decency.

The words “Ceci n’est pas un sein” written underneath it, in reference to the words “Ceci n’est pas une pipe” in Magritte’s painting, makes the statement that the censorship of female nipples is a form of deception, a kind of treachery that undermines our freedom of expression. The work asserts that the censorship is not rooted in actual morality, and calls for a reevaluation of the policies that restrict the expression of certain genders.
