Fine Art Print “Valeur Marchande“
The work engages with the complexities of the art market and its relationship to the commodification of art. The visual language is used to critique the ways in which the profit motive often undermines the true aims of art, such as self-expression, creativity and social commentary. Through this piece, attention is called to the ways in which the art market is driven by the desire for profit and validation of certain world-views, rather than a genuine appreciation for the art itself, and how it can often lead to a distortion of the art itself.
“Valeur Marchande” (Market Value), also touches on the idea that we live in a capitalist society, and that its power is inescapable. It alludes to the idea that the market’s demands can shape the art’s value and meaning, and how the art world is not immune to the economic, social and political forces that shape our lives. By presenting this commentary, the aim is to encourage the viewer to question the role of art and its relationship to broader societal issues.
